ALERT

090202: INDIANA LEGISLATORS SLAM DOOR ON CHARTER SCHOOLS!

Parents and Friends of Indiana Charter Schools, On February 2, 2009, the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee voted straight party line against families continuing to enjoy their public charter school in Indiana. Specifically, all 14 Democrats voted for House Bill 1723 and all 9 Republicans voted against it.

Why?

Because the bill:

1. Establishes a moratorium on new charter schools.

2. Establishes a moratorium on growth in existing charter schools.

If approved by the full House and Senate and signed by the Governor, the bill will not allow existing charter schools to replicate or expand enrollment or grade levels offered. Charter schools will not be able to add new students or grade levels next year. For example, schools currently providing grades 9-10 and planning to expand to grades 11 and 12, would not be able to do so. Current 10th graders would have to find another school to attend in 2009-2010. It also means that if a schoolÕs current enrollment is 350 students and would like to grow to 400, it would not be able to because you would only get funding for 350 students. And what does this mean for your younger children who donÕt attend school yet? Where will they be forced to go to school?

The list of legislators, along with their contact information, who voted to close the door to charter schools to you and thousands of families in Indiana is provided in a PDF file that can be downloaded here.

This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins.
